Woman struck by car in critical condition

A woman is in critical condition after being struck by a car while crossing State Road 135 earlier this week.

Megan Dougherty, 27, of Indianapolis, was struck by a car around 6:25 a.m. Monday while she was crossing State Road 135 near Royal View Lane, which is between Olive Branch Road and Curry Road, a Greenwood Police Department report said.

The driver, Robert Hart, 57, of Greenwood, told officers that he had been going south on State Road 135 in the left lane when he hit Dougherty, and that he had not seen her prior to the crash, the report said. At the time of the accident, the area, which doesn’t have street lights, was dark, and Dougherty was wearing dark-colored clothing, the report said.

Dougherty was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital for treatment. She was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.

Dougherty is the second pedestrian struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross that section of State Road 135 this month. On Feb. 9, a 27-year-old man was taken to a hospital with two broken legs and a neck injury after he was hit by a car while standing in the center turn lane, waiting to cross the highway.
