COVENTRY, R.I. — Police say a man who abandoned a dog and left a turtle frozen in a fish tank in Rhode Island has turned himself in.

Authorities say the 24-year-old man turned himself in Wednesday, and he is facing animal cruelty charges.

Animal control officers responded to a report of an abandoned animal at a Coventry home last week and found the turtle encased in ice. Police say the home had been vacant for several days.

Officers took the turtle’s tank to Animal Control and let it thaw out. The turtle moved its eyes the following day, leading officers to take it to a reptile organization for rehabilitation.

Officers have named the turtle Elsa after the princess in Disney’s animated film “Frozen.” Police say the dog, Ana, is up for adoption.
