Woman dies of gunshot wound

PEOGA — A woman was shot and died over the weekend at a home near the Johnson County-Brown County line.

Resident Ashley Minatel, 33, was found dead from a gunshot wound in the front yard of the home Sunday, Brown County Coroner Earl Piper said. The investigation is ongoing.

Just before noon on Sunday, Brown County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 3800 block of Peoga Road near the Brown-Johnson county line for a report of shots fired, according to a news release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

Minatel was killed by another person, Piper said, but he would not comment further about the death investigation until an autopsy was completed.

Piper said a handgun was used, but he was not sure of the caliber.

A 35-year-old man was at the scene when deputies arrived. He was questioned and released, the news release said. He was the same man who called police to report shots fired, Sheriff Scott Southerland said.

The man and Minatel both lived at that address, Southerland said.

No one had been arrested in connection with the death as of Monday.

The sheriff’s department was assisted at the scene by Indiana State Police crime scene technicians.
