MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Officials have released the name of a fisherman who drowned in South Carolina over the weekend.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office told local media that 46-year-old Lonnie East IV of Goose Creek died when he fell overboard Sunday morning.

The coroner’s office says East had been fishing in a rice field on the Cooper River when he fell into the water.

Coroner Bill Salisbury ruled the death accidental. Salisbury said nearby fishermen tried to save East before he went under the water.

The sheriff’s office and the state Department of Natural Resources combed the river near Bonneau Ferry Sunday before finding East’s body around 4 p.m.

State officials say East had not been wearing a life jacket.
