PORTLAND, Ore. — An investigation has found that Portland Public Schools retaliated against a substitute teacher for reporting sexual misconduct by one of its employees.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports a district human resources investigation found Caprice, who asked to only be identified by her first name, was iced out of substitute teaching positions because of a report she made in 2012.
She reported that then-teacher Mitch Whitehurst had demanded oral sex from her and a friend when they were students in the 1980s.
Records showed she put in for, and was selected for, substitute teaching days at the school where Whitehurst taught — but that her assignments were canceled before they took effect.
As a result, the report says the district will pay Caprice for money she lost from canceled assignments.
The report also says employees will be disciplined for the retaliation, but does not name any names.
