SAN SIMEON, Calif. — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people and a cat from a sailboat in heavy seas off California’s Central Coast.
The crew of the Bella Gina reported Monday that the vessel was taking on water off Point Piedras Blancas and requested assistance.
The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a 47-foot motor lifeboat.
Seas were running 12 to 14 feet when the rescue crews arrived. The boat crew was unable to dewater or safely tow the stricken sailboat and recommended an evacuation.
The helicopter crew hoisted the three people and their cat from the boat and flew them to Paso Robles Municipal Airport.
Point Piedras Blancas is northwest of San Simeon.
