COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina health officials are reporting the first death of a child from the flu this season.

Local news outlets report that until Friday, no children had been reported to die from the flu in South Carolina this season.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control said only that the death occurred in the Midlands regions. No other details were provided.

So far, 106 people have died from the flu in South Carolina, including 22 new cases of adult deaths reported Wednesday.

Federal health officials report 63 children had died of the flu by Feb. 3 across the country.
