GREENVILLE, Miss. — Some property owners bordering a flood-prone oxbow lake want zoning changed to allow a handful of campers and mobile homes.

The Delta Democrat-Times reports that Washington County supervisors are considering grandfathering existing campers and recreational vehicles at Lake Ferguson. Right now, zoning prohibits them on lakefront properties. However, that land is unprotected by the Mississippi River levee and subject to flooding, making a movable home attractive, especially to people who don’t live on their land permanently.

Most residents support allowing current owners to keep their campers, but a few residents want the county to stick to the current zoning, saying campers are a drag on property values.

Complicating the situation, residents say county officials granted permits to current recreational vehicle dwellers despite the ordinance forbidding them.
