LAS VEGAS — A 25-year-old Las Vegas man has been arrested as a suspect in the death of his infant daughter.

Las Vegas police say Cash Ballew turned himself into detectives on Monday and was booked into the county jail on one count of suspicion of open murder.

The department’s Abuse and Neglect Detail began an investigation at about 5 a.m. Monday when officers were called to the Sunrise Pediatrics Hospital to investigate the suspicious death of the 2.5-year-old girl.

An initial investigation indicates Ballew allegedly smothered the child to get her to stop crying.

Police say Ballew and the girl’s mother called 911 when they realized she wasn’t breathing. She was taken to the hospital emergency room.

Ballew left before officer’s arrived but later surrendered to detectives. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer or will be appointed one.
