ANDERSON, S.C. — A South Carolina coroner says a man shot himself in the head and died after being approached about shoplifting.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore told news outlets that 23-year-old Javier Castaneda of Pelzer died Monday night after Anderson police confronted him outside a Sam’s Club.

Shore said officers were called around 7:20 p.m. to investigate a shoplifting at a neighboring Walmart.

Anderson Police Chief Jim Stewart said officers caught up with the man at a loading dock behind Sam’s Club and as an officer attempted to restrain the man, he pulled a gun and shot himself.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating since an officer was at the scene when the man died.

Pelzer was pronounced dead at an Anderson hospital.
