PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ruled that a community center was not negligent in a fatal crash that happened after a 14-year-old boy stole the center’s van.

The Providence Journal reports the high court released its ruling Monday in the Nickerson Community Center case. The court took the case after Stephanie Flynn appealed a lower court ruling that determined the center wasn’t negligent in the 2010 crash that killed Flynn’s 10-year-old daughter.

A 14-year-old boy broke into the center, stole keys and took a van before the crash.

The court determined Nickerson couldn’t have predicted the series of events that led to the crash. The court wrote that Nickerson didn’t “owe a duty” to Flynn because it had no relation to the boy who stole the van, Flynn or her family.
