GETTYSBURG, Pa. — A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole in the beating death of his roommate last year.

PennLive.com reports that 46-year-old Walter Smith Jr. of Hanover was sentenced Monday in Adams County Court on December convictions of first- and third-degree murder.

Prosecutors said he attacked 44-year-old Mitchell Jones with a ceramic water pitcher in their Conewago Township apartment in June 2016 after the two were drinking and smoking crack together.

Smith told police that Jones had tried to stab him with a screwdriver. Jones was found in an upstairs bedroom with serious head injuries and a black plastic bag over his head.
