Heater causes fire at Whiteland motel

A Friday morning fire damaged an unoccupied room at a Whiteland motel.

An employee opened the door of a unit at the Wishing Well Motel around 8:45 a.m. Friday to find that the room was filled with smoke, Whiteland Fire Chief Eric Funkhouser said.

The night before, the motel was having issues with a heater not working properly and had turned it off and moved the customer to another room, he said.

Firefighters evacuated other nearby units and spent about 25 minutes putting out the fire, which had burned through the wall behind the heater, Funkhouser said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. An electrical issue inside the wall behind the heater is believed to have started the fire, he said.

The Franklin, Bargersville, Greenwood and New Whiteland fire departments assisted, Funkhouser said.
