LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Police outside Atlanta say a homeowner killed a man who was trying to break into his car early Friday.

A Gwinnett County police statement says the homeowner is telling officers that he grabbed his firearm and verbally challenged the intruder in his driveway. The statement says the intruder then charged at the homeowner, who fired more than one shot striking the intruder, who died at the scene.

Police have not released any identities. They describe the dead man as a “middle-aged white male.”

Police say there’s no link between the men, and it’s unclear why the Lawrenceville home was targeted. The homeowner is cooperating with police and it’s unclear whether charges will be filed.
