Nonprofits teaching about teen brains

Multiple local nonprofit organizations are teaming up to teach educators, youth workers and parents about how the teen brain works.

Indiana Youth Institute along with Youth Connections, Girls, Inc. of Johnson County, Children’s Bureau, Inc.; and Johnson County System of Care are hosting an event about the stages of adolescent brain development from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at Greenwood Christian Church, 2045 Averitt Road, Greenwood.

Jane Yip, director at Indiana Brain Mapping and a neuroscientist specializing in brain circuitry,will discuss the development of the teen brain, along with how the onset of puberty affects behavior, intelligence and maturity. Attendees also will learn how to set realistic expectations for teens as they experience changes to their brains, as well as how to incorporate research into their youth programming.

The event is free but a RSVP is required and can be be made at iyi.org/ywc.
