ADELANTO, Calif. — The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says a man boarded a broken-down bus on U.S. 395 in the high desert community of Adelanto and began verbally assaulting and threatening passengers, the driver and a mechanic who was repairing the vehicle.

The incident involving a Victor Valley Transit bus occurred around noon Thursday.

A department statement says the driver picked a tool known as a tire thumper and told the man to leave the passengers alone and get off the bus, but the man took the tool away from driver, injuring her hand and arm.

The assailant then ordered the passengers off the bus and chased the mechanic down the street.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and took the man into custody and booked him into High Desert Detention Center.
