GREENVILLE, N.C. — East Carolina has hired Daric Riley as its safeties coach.

Coach Scottie Montgomery on Friday announced the hiring of Riley, who spent the past three seasons on SMU’s staff.

Montgomery says Riley is “a perfect fit with a significant change in our defensive philosophy and point of attack.” The Pirates ranked among the nation’s worst defenses in 2017.

He also coordinated the special teams and coached outside linebackers at UAB before coming to SMU as a quality control assistant and special teams analyst.
