Charles Eugene Gearhardt

Charles Eugene Gearhardt, age 90, of Greenwood, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, January 9, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Charles was born on June 6, 1927 in Bartholomew County, IN to the late Charles E. Gearhart and Ethel (Dill) Gearhart. He graduated from Columbus High School and served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. On October 23, 1945, he married the love of his life, Louise F. (Strahl) Gearhardt, who survives. He worked for General Motors, Allison Division for over 35 years as a tool and die maker before retiring in 1985. Charles served as an Elder at both Greenwood Christian Church and Garden City Church of Christ. He had also been a dedicated supporter of Missions programs around the world. He loved fishing, hunting, working in his garden as often as possible, watching The Chicago Cubs, cheering on The Hoosiers and the Boilermakers. But most of all, he adored his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Louise Gearhardt, three sons, Nicholas Gearhardt of Greenwood, Doug Gearhardt of Wisconsin and Paul Gearhardt (Lori) of Hagerstown, IN; one daughter, Joyce Beheler (Rodney) of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Gearhart and Margaret Lane.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 10:00 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel. The family will receive guests from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, January 14 and from 9:00 AM until the time of service on Monday. Entombment will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
