ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities say two men killed in a shootout at a South Carolina nightclub had a disagreement hours before guns were drawn.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman says 49-year-old Harold “Cookie” Lee Gaines Jr. and 29-year-old Jwan Smith both died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

County Sheriff Chad McBride tells news outlets that the men were killed in the shootout early Monday.

Authorities say Smith’s ex-girlfriend was a relative or “was possibly like a daughter” to Gaines, and their dispute was about the woman.

McBride says Smith and a 22-year-old man confronted Gaines at the club. The 22-year-old man was also shot. Authorities say his condition is critical.
