FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Snowfall in Flagstaff area delayed school openings in the northern Arizona city and closed Interstate 40 near Williams for several hours, while heavy rain helped cause a fatal wreck in north-central Arizona.
I-40 reopened Wednesday morning after being closed late Tuesday night due to snow, and Trooper Kameron Lee of the state Department of Public Safety says heavy rain apparently was a contributing factor to a five-vehicle collision involving fatalities and additional injuries on southbound Interstate 17 at State Route 169 Tuesday evening.
DPS also reports multiple non-injury accidents and slide-offs in the Flagstaff area.
The National Weather Service reports 4.7 inches of snow at Flagstaff where light snow showers are expected to decrease through the morning.
Flagstaff Unified School District schools delayed openings by two hours.
