ELKO, Nev. — A 21-year-old northeast Nevada man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he met on Facebook has entered a guilty plea in district court in Elko.

Jonathan D. Martinez, 21, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of sexual assault of a child under the age of 14.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports it was part of a plea-bargain arrangement that resulted in the dropping of a second lewdness charge, but he still could face up to life in prison.

Martinez was arrested June 29 at a casino in Wells. According to court documents, he had messaged the victim on Facebook for several months before they met on the night of May 22 at a school in Wells. After the assault, the victim stated he threatened her with “consequences” if she told anyone.

A sentencing date is pending.
