SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — A southern Arizona elementary school was placed on lockdown after authorities received reports of an active shooter.
Authorities say a 14-year-old student was later found dead in a school bathroom from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide Tuesday.
The name of the boy wasn’t immediately released.
Cochise County Sheriff’s officials say an investigation into the death is ongoing.
Sierra Vista Unified School District officials say Coronado Elementary School went into lockdown after the sheriff’s office got a call about a shooter around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Arriving sheriff’s deputies found the boy’s body and determined other students weren’t in danger.
Students taken to Sierra Springs Church in nearby Hereford were offered counseling.
Sierra Vista provides public information support to the smaller Palominas Elementary School District that Coronado belongs to.
