GASSAWAY, W.Va. — Three people have died in a house fire in West Virginia.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office said on social media that two people also were injured in Thursday’s fire in Braxton County.

News outlets report the fire broke out about 7:30 a.m. Deputy State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic said firefighters sorted through the rubble all day, recovering bodies. Crews also found the remains of a dog.

The two people injured were taken to a Pittsburgh hospital. Authorities say one of them wasn’t seriously injured.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The fire also damaged phone lines in the area, leaving about 1,000 people without service. Service was mostly restored late Thursday night, but authorities say a few dozen people in rural areas are still experiencing phone outages.
