More than a week of extreme cold in northern New England is going to give way briefly, but the warming temperature is going to be accompanied by a howling snowstorm.

The National Weather Service says the snow will arrive Thursday, with 8 to 12 inches projected on the New Hampshire coast and in much of Maine. About 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected in central and western New Hampshire and in Vermont.

The snow will be accompanied by gusts of wind hitting 35 to 45 miles per hour. The wind will continue Friday before colder temperatures return for the weekend.

Events are being postponed. The New Hampshire House, which opened its 2018 session Wednesday, said it was rescheduling Thursday’s meeting to next week.
