WESTMORE, Vt. — Sub-zero temperatures have forced the organizers of an annual New Year’s Day dip into a Vermont lake to cancel the event for the first time in its 14-year history.
Fred Laferriere tells The Caledonian Record he decided to cancel the Willoughby Dip after the National Weather Service issued a frostbite warning due to the dangerous cold. He says the event will be held next New Year’s Day.
Laferriere launched the annual jump into Lake Willoughby in Westmore in honor of his brother who died from cancer. The event has raised close to a quarter of a million dollars for the American Cancer Society.
Laferriere says about 50 people participate in the jump. Donations for this year’s event will be sent to the cancer society.
