LITTLETON, Mass. — Firefighters say a 77-year-old woman was found dead inside a Massachusetts home after a fire early New Year’s Day.

Littleton Fire Chief Scott Wodzinski says efforts to fight the flames and rescue the woman Monday morning were hampered by piles of clutter that made it difficult for firefighters to navigate the home.

The deceased woman was identified as Jan Karner. Fire officials say her husband escaped the flames before firefighters arrived.
