GAUTIER, Miss. — Police in coastal Mississippi say a New Year’s Day shooting left one man dead and another injured.

Gautier police Capt. Casey Baxter told the Sun Herald that police responding to a report of a shooting just before 9:15 a.m. Monday found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Baxter said both men were taken to a hospital, where one was pronounced dead. Baxter said the other man went into surgery and was expected to survive.

Baxter said Willie Campbell Jr. was arrested Monday and faces one charge of manslaughter and one charge of aggravated assault. He was being held without bond and it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Baxter said the investigation was ongoing. Anyone with information was urged to call police.
