CHARLESTON, S.C. — Authorities say a 19-year-old woman in a car trying to escape from police in South Carolina was arrested after firing several shots at officers and no one was hurt.

Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said two officers smelled marijuana in the car as it slowly passed them around 11:45 a.m. Saturday in the West Ashley section of Charleston.

Francis says the officers tried to pull over the car, but the driver fled, nearly hitting a pedestrian.

Francis said in a statement the front seat passenger then fired several shots and all four people in the car tried to run away. The officers did not fire their guns.

Francis says police charged Brianna Sampson with attempted murder and weapons charges. Jail records didn’t indicate if she had a lawyer.
