HILLSBORO, Ill. — Bitter cold won’t keep nature lovers from the annual New Year’s Day walk at the Helen & Betty Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary .
But the (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that the walk might be shorter than the typical 60 to 90 minutes.
Jerry Prater is representative of the Illinois Audubon Society’s Hickory Hills Chapter . He says there were about 100 walkers in 40-degree weather last year.
He expects a good turnout for Monday’s 11 a.m. hike despite the freeze.
The property is 203 acres (82 hectares) with a new covered bridge. It was a farm established in 1857. It’s named for the sisters who donated it in parcels from 1977 to 1999.
Most of the land is now tallgrass prairie and woodlands.
Hillsboro is 250 miles (402 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
