ATLANTA — Atlanta city officials are planning a major expansion for one of the city’s biggest public parks.
Outgoing Mayor Kasim Reed announced the $100 million plan for Piedmont Park on Friday, during his last news conference of his eight years as mayor.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the city has entered into agreements to purchase about five acres of land at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive for $20 million.
That area is now home to a gas station and older strip malls with restaurants, a cleaners and a hair salon.
To complete the overall expansion of Piedmont Park, the city still needs to assemble a few more parcels of land.
