Warriors win opener

Whiteland rolled in a holiday tournament opener Friday afternoon against host South Ripley 67-45 behind 17 points from Brennan Neal and 14 from Elijah Weatherspoon.

The Warriors (2-5) faced Jennings County in a semifinal game that had not been completed by press time.

The Warriors (3-5) then edged Jennings County in a late semifinal 65-63 behind 24 points from Neal. They will face East Central for the championship tonight.

Whiteland falls

Whiteland lost a narrow 39-37 battle with Eastern (Pekin) in the third-place game of the Vincennes Rivet holiday tournament Friday evening.

The Warriors (13-3), who got 15 points from Toni Joyner and 13 from Mackenzie Blazek, had a shot to tie it at the buzzer but couldn’t get it to fall.

Trojans advance trio

Center Grove moved three wrestlers into the semifinal round on the first day of the Al Smith Invitational in Mishawaka on Friday.

Alex Petro (113 pounds), Gleason Mappes (160) and Jonah Hays (170) each won three matches on the day without a loss to move forward. Peyton Pruett went 4-1 at 145 pounds for the Trojans, while Julius Byrd (182) and Shane Stits (195) were both 3-1.

Women downed in OT

Franklin College battled back from a 17-point deficit to force overtime before suffering a 70-65 defeat against Kenyon College in the first round of the Capital Holiday Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Bayleigh Walker had 22 points and nine rebounds to pace the Grizzlies (3-6).
