SOLDOTNA, Alaska — The Alaska State Trooper who shot and wounded a suspect in the back of a trooper patrol car near Soldotna is a 24-year-veteran of the Department of Public Safety.

Troopers say the officer who fired is Lt. Dane Gilmore, deputy commander of the agency’s E Detachment.

Troopers took a report Saturday afternoon of a suspicious man on private property. An officer offered him a ride home in the cold temperatures.

In the back of the patrol car, the man pulled out a handgun. The officer got out and called in other troopers.

Negotiators tried to get the man to surrender. After two hours, he pointed the handgun at officers and Gilmore shot him.

The suspect was transported to Central Peninsula Hospital.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
