ASHEVILLE, N.C. — As prominent chefs face sexual harassment accusations nationwide, a group of restaurant workers in one North Carolina city is forming a coalition to bring awareness of harassment in the local community.
Alia Todd, a founder of Asheville Sustainable Restaurant Workforce, the worker advocacy group leading the effort, told The Asheville Citizen-Times her group is focusing on exploring the employee-boss dynamic in culinary settings.
Todd says her group will approach workplace harassment in three stages. The first month will focus on awareness of workers’ rights and surveying workers, the second month will focus on accountability and resources and the third month will consist of direct action.
Asheville Independent Restaurants Executive Director Jane Anderson says many member restaurants don’t have human resources departments, but she’s trying to provide her team with resources.
