WESTLAND, Mich. — A 22-year-old man who was shot and wounded by police has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his mother in suburban Detroit.

Justin Jay Paul was arraigned Friday in 18th District Court on a charge of first-degree murder and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He appeared without a lawyer and was ordered held without bond pending hearings scheduled for next month.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says he stabbed 50-year-old Jeannette Lee Paul in the neck Wednesday at their Westland home. A family member called police, who found Jeannette Paul dead.

Justin Paul was caught by police in nearby Livonia and was shot in the upper thigh by a Livonia officer while being apprehended. He was treated at a hospital before being jailed.

This story has been corrected to indicate that Justin Jay Paul’s age is 22, not 20.
