NEW YORK — Police say a 35-year-old woman has been fatally shot inside a New York City apartment and a suspect is in custody.

The New York Police Department says officers responded shortly after midnight Wednesday to a 911 call reporting a person shot inside a second-floor hallway at an apartment complex on Trantor Place on Staten Island.

Officers say they found an unconscious woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her chest. Emergency services crews pronounced her dead at the scene.

The NYPD has identified the victim as Bridget Shenk, who lived in the apartment building.

Police say they took a 42-year-old man into custody at the scene and recovered a .40-caliber handgun. Charges are pending.
