CHICAGO — An Illinois sheriff’s office is setting up more than 80 sites where people can turn in expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications.

In a news release, Sheriff Tom Dart’s office says the sites are part of an annual Sheriff’s Prescription Take Back Program that is designed to reduce the chance of people abusing or being accidentally poisoned by medications.

Because water treatment facilities can’t remove the minuscule concentrations of chemicals found in prescriptions, the effort allows for the disposal of medications in a way that doesn’t pollute residential water.

People wanting information about the program and the locations of the Cook County disposal sites may call 1-844-688-7379.
