SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A former police detective in upstate New York has pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting a child.

Former Ogdensburg detective Harry McCarthy pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Syracuse to charges of using a child to make child pornography during the time that he worked with the city police department. He faces 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in April.

The sentence would also be followed by a lifetime of supervised release and registration as a sex offender.

The 57-year-old McCarthy was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2016 after a joint investigation by the FBI and the New York State Police.
