SHAMONG, N.J. — State police in New Jersey say they were pursuing a stolen sport utility vehicle when it struck a utility pole and burst into flames, killing three people.

Police said troopers responded at about noon Monday to the Pic-a-Lilli Inn on Route 206 in Shamong on a report of a stolen SUV.

Police said the vehicle was spotted heading north on Route 206 “driving erratically at a high rate of speed.” Troopers said they followed it for a short distance before it went out of control, ran off the side of the road, struck a utility pole and became engulfed in flames.

All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. They haven’t yet been identified. Police say they are still investigating the circumstances of the stolen vehicle and the accident.
