HELENA, Mont. — A winter storm is dropping heavy snow in parts of northern and central Montana, causing hazardous driving conditions.
The Montana Department of Transportation reports slick conditions on many roads and highways, including Interstate 15 north of Helena.
The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm warning for much of the northern half of the state, including Helena, Great Falls, Kalispell and Havre.
Up to 3 feet (91 centimeters) of snow is possible in mountain areas, and up to a foot (30 centimeters) in the valleys.
Northeast Montana, including Glendive and Glasgow, is under a winter weather advisory is posted.
An avalanche warning is in effect for the Flathead, Whitefish Range and Swan ranges and for Glacier National Park.
Arctic cold will follow the storm later this week.
