Ruthie G. Gibbs

NINEVEH

Ruthie G. Gibbs, 90, of Nineveh, gained her angel wings at 5:20 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017 with many of her loved ones by her side. Ruthie’s story began on Sunday, February 27, 1927 in Leachville, Arkansas where she was born to the late John D. and Lina Deharrett (Daniel) Hatcher.

She spent much of her childhood in Missouri where she attended school before eventually moving to Indiana. On February 22, 1943 she married Vernon Dale Gibbs; he preceded her in death on November 30, 1990. The two spent most of their married life in Morgantown and Martinsville. Ruthie worked for over 24 years at Bemis Bag Company in Indianapolis, retiring in 1984. After retirement, she went to work in the cafeteria at Smith Elementary School for approximately three years.

She was a longtime member of the First Church of God in Martinsville and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post #1257. Ruthie had been an active and dedicated member of the V.F.W. serving as past president of the local chapter, as well as, District #7.

She lived life with zest and appreciation. Ruthie almost never missed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events or extracurricular activities, nor did she pass-up an opportunity to spend time with them. She enjoyed quilting, reading scripture and Christian fiction, though her greatest love was undoubtedly her grandchildren and her only great great grandchild, Clark Wesley Waggoner, aka her “BFF” according to Ruthie.

The vast number of memories will forever be cherished by her family and friends she leaves behind including her son, Allen Dale (wife, Deborah) Gibbs of Summerfield, FL; daughter, Glenda Ruth (husband, Steve) Clark of Nineveh, IN; sister, Margie Ledford of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Melissa Mayor, Jennifer Wooten, Jamie Evans, Kristina Davenport, Lisa Buening, and Bill Clark; several great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Ruthie was preceded in death by her husband; 5 sisters, Dollie Cummins, Carmen Myers, Dovie Tatum, Berdie Ellen Hale and Ruby Bolin; brother, Johnny R. Hatcher and 4 half-sisters, Mary Ann Garrison, Reva Lawrence, Annie Mae Baledge and Edith Fears.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. Rev. Delbert Cottrell will conduct a service celebrating Ruthie’s life on Monday at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 pm and she will be laid to rest following the service in Nineveh Cemetery, Nineveh, IN.
