County man loses $2,000 in piano scam

A Johnson County man lost $2,000 to a scam after cashing a fraudulent check while attempting to sell a piano over the internet.

The man had listed a piano for sale on eBay and a person called him wanting to buy the piano, but not through eBay. The buyer agreed to purchase the piano for $800, but mailed the man a $2,250 check. The buyer then asked for $1,350 to be sent via a wire transfer to Texas and then for $600 to be sent back to him, as he had changed his mind about the purchase, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

After making those payments, the seller found that the check he had been sent was fake, the report said.
