Cougars roll past Southwestern

A dominating first quarter helped Greenwood Christian power its way to a 65-45 win at Southwestern (Shelbyville) on Tuesday night.

Champ McCorkle scored 22 points and Kegan Owen added 14 for the Cougars (3-3), who built a 24-10 lead in the opening period and cruised from there.

Woodmen get conference wins

Greenwood swept Mid-State Conference rival Decatur Central on Tuesday, rolling to a 142-39 win in the girls meet while the boys earned a tight 88-83 victory.

Alex Wilson (100-yard freestyle, 100 backstroke), Grace Nuhfer (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and Alayna Kenworthy (200 and 500 freestyle) were double individual winners for the girls, who also swept all three relays. Rachel Knight (50 free), Samantha Loudermilk (100 breaststroke) and Faith Jackson (diving) added first-place finishes.

For the boys, Clyde Vaught won the 50 and 100 freestyle and also anchored the winning medley relay.

Trojans swept by Avon

Center Grove’s boys suffered a narrow 95-91 defeat in a dual meet against Avon on Tuesday night. The Trojans also lost the girls meet, 119-67.

Franklin College

Burton a first team All-American

Franklin College quarterback Chase Burton was named a first team Division III All-American by the American Football Coaches Association on Tuesday, becoming just the third player in school history to earn the honor.

Burton currently leads the nation in passing yardage with 3,916 and ranks second with 43 touchdown throws. He helped lead the Grizzlies to an 8-3 record, an outright HCAC championship and an NCAA Division III playoff bid.
