Man dies in 4-car pileup on State Road 37

A Martinsville man was killed in a four-car crash on State Road 37 in the Center Grove area on Friday afternoon.

James Moran, 58, died from injuries he suffered when a semi-tractor trailer hit him as he stopped for a traffic light at Fairview Road, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Moran’s truck was forced off the road, rolled over and hit a traffic light pole. Both vehicles had been heading north when Moran began slowing for the traffic light, the sheriff’s office said. The semi struck him from behind.

The semi was being driven by Michael W. Burke, 59, of Indianapolis. Burke’s semi then hit a sport-utility vehicle being driven by Jacqueline L. Gordon, 72, of Albion, the sheriff’s office said.

A fourth vehicle was damaged when the tailgate flew off Moran’s vehicle and hit a truck driven by Christopher J. Clements, 48 of Camby. Clements was stopped on Fairview Road at the time, waiting to turn left and head south on State Road 37.

The accident was reported at 2:42 p.m. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the accident. Burke voluntarily submitted to a blood test, which is standard in accidents that cause serious injuries or death.

White River Township firefighters, Bargersville police and the Indiana State Police helped at the scene.
