Boys basketball

Richards, Grizzly Cubs top Jets

Cory Richards exploded for 32 points to help visiting Franklin pull away from Hauser, 79-64, on Saturday for its first victory of the season.

The Grizzly Cubs (1-3) trailed, 36-34, early in the third quarter before Blaine Wentzell started a 14-0 run that put them ahead for good.

Reece Thomson contributed 13 points and Wentzell added 10 for Franklin.

Lancers pull out league win

Bryce Burton scored 20 points and Coltan Henderson hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left to lift Edinburgh to a 50-49 home win over North Decatur on Saturday.

Christian Cox finished with 11 points and Henderson had 10 for the Lancers (4-2, 2-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference).

Cougars top Indy Lutheran

Champ McCorkle finished with 27 points, helping Greenwood Christian to a 71-57 victory over Indianapolis Lutheran on Saturday evening.

Kegan Owen added 15 points for the Cougars (2-3), while Payton Modlin added 13 points and five assists.

Girls basketball

Warriors score big OT win

Mackenzie Blazek scored 29 points and Megan Harlow added 18 as Whiteland took control of the Mid-State Conference race with a 69-62 overtime victory against visiting Martinsville on Saturday.

Natalie Stuck contributed 12 points and Toni Joyner had nine for the Warriors (9-1, 3-0), who outscored the Artesians 13-6 in the extra period to overcome 29 points from Miss Basketball candidate Kayana Traylor.

Lancers edge Milan

Edinburgh got out to a strong start and held on for a 50-45 victory against  Milan on Saturday.

Destiney Ramey led the Lancers (5-6) with 15 points, while Haven Link added 13 and Taylor Tatlock had 11.

Woodmen fall to Pioneers

Greenwood fell into a big first-half hole and couldn’t recover in a 53-37 home loss to Mooresville on Saturday. Leah Moore paced the Woodmen (6-6, 0-3 Mid-State) with 13 points.

Wrestling

Trojans third at Zionsville

Center Grove finished in third place at the seven-team Zionsville Invitational, trailing behind only Chesterton and the host Eagles.

Gleason Mappes went 4-0 at 160 pounds and was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. Also finishing unbeaten for the Trojans were Alex Petro (113 pounds), Peyton Pruett (145), Jonah Hays (170) and Andrew Rector (220).

Warriors win three in Columbus

Whiteland finished 3-2 at the Columbus North Invitational on Saturday, beating Brown County (58-24), Bloomington North (42-37) and the host Bull Dogs (48-24).

Ryan Hammond was a perfect 5-0 at 220 pounds for the Warriors, who improved to 7-6 on the year. Kobie King (138 pounds), Luke Richardson (145), Ryan Glithero (170) and Garrett Curtis (285) each collected four wins.

Franklin College

Women’s basketball tops Defiance

Bayleigh Walker dropped in 27 points to pace a hot-shooting Franklin College team during a 73-61 win at Defiance on Saturday.

Mallory Cast added 14 points for the Grizzlies (2-3, 2-1 HCAC), who shot 53.4 percent (31 of 58) from the field. Franklin will host Bluffton this Saturday afternoon.

Men’s basketball falls at Defiance

Down by a dozen with about nine minutes to go, Franklin College battled back to get as close as two but couldn’t get over the hump in a 76-72 setback at Defiance on Saturday.

John Beineke scored 17 points for the Grizzlies (2-6, 1-2 HCAC), while Jordan Anderson and Kale Morris added 16 and 14, respectively.

Franklin will host Bluffton Saturday afternoon.
