Dr. Robert R. Kopecky

Dr. Robert R. Kopecky of Greenwood, IN passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Born on Jan. 20, 1925 to the late Frank and Emma (Kutilek) Kopecky in Omaha, NE, Dr. Kopecky spent 35 years in Family Practice during which the last 30 years was limited to Obstetrics and Pediatrics. He delivered approximately five thousand babies during this period. He was raised on a farm and attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He received his B.S. degree from Doan College in Crete, NE and his MD degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN and he also attended the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor, MI. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Indianapolis.

Dr. Kopecky served in World War II and the Korean War. After retiring from medical practice, Dr. Kopecky had a number of administrative appointments and affiliations which included ten years as the first Medical Director of St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers and three years as the Medical Executive Officer of the Medical Service Organization of St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers. He was appointed to the Central Indiana Governing Board of Directors of the Sisters of St. Francis Heath Services. He served on the corporate finance committee of the above organization, and served as the Chairman of the Medical Staff Performance Committee of the Central Indiana Governing Board. He was recently awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash.

In 1982 he was appointed to the State of Indiana Medical Licensing Board by Governor Otis Bowen. He served eight years on the Board of Directors of the United Home Life Insurance Company, served on the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Greenwood, and was a long time board member of the Greater Southside Organization of Indianapolis.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and South America. He looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada with doctor colleagues and his three sons. He was a lifelong member at Franklin Golf and County Club in Franklin, IN. Dr. Kopecky was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Whiteland, IN.

Survivors include his wife, Milly; children, Dr. Kenyon (Sue) Kopecky, Ed (Susan) Kopecky and Thomas (Carol) Kopecky; nine grandchildren, Andrea, Brian, Greg, Kelsey, Kevin, and Dr. Kimberly Kopecky, Scott Mattes and Kimberly Mattes Cappella; four great-grandsons, Enzo, Massimo, Dario, and Nico Cappella; sister, Dr. Lavonne Plambeck (Don) and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorna Kopecky; grandson Benjamin Jay Kopecky and brother Frank Kopecky.

Visitation will be observed on Sunday, December 3 from 2:00-6:00 PM at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, IN. The Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM, on Monday, December 4 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 600 Paul Hand Blvd, Franklin, IN 46131, with visitation on Monday, December 4 from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, IN.
