College update – December 2

Army linebacker Alex Aukerman has two football games remaining in his college career, including his final battle against rival Navy.

The former Center Grove player takes the field today in Philadelphia leading the Black Knights in sacks with 14.5 and is third in tackles with 58.

Army snapped its 14-game losing streak to the Midshipmen last season by a score of 21-17, thanks in part to Aukerman’s five tackles. The Black Knights (8-3) also will be playing in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Denton, Texas, on Dec. 23.

CENTER GROVE

Junior guard Jessica Norris poured in a game-high 24 points for the Holy Cross (Indiana) women’s basketball team in a victory against IU South Bend. Norris almost achieved triple-double status with eight rebounds and nine assists. Norris followed with 27 points, 11 boards and three assists in an overtime loss to IU Northwest.

Marian University women’s soccer player Nicole Jansen took part in every match for the Knights this season as they finished with a record of 16-3-4. Jansen, a sophomore defender, helped lead Marian to the No. 14 ranking and a berth in the NAIA national tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama. The Knights were solid defensively, recording 11 shutouts before losing to No. 1 Martin Methodist in a shootout, 4-3, at the NAIA tourney.

Running back Max Norris finished with nine carries for 46 yards in Western Illinois’ 21-19 loss at Weber State in an NCAA FCS playoff game at Ogden, Utah.

Defending NAIA football champion St. Francis started senior Alex Woods and junior Austin Smogor an the offensive line as it defeated Northwestern 30-3 in a quarterfinal playoff game.

Defensive end Jovan Swann produced two tackles, including one for loss, in Stanford’s 38-20 conquest of Notre Dame.

Sophomore defensive lineman Gavin Everett had a tackle in Indiana’s 31-24 loss at Purdue.

Indiana State played two games at a women’s basketball tournament in Cancun, Mexico. Junior Regan Wentland had five rebounds and a team-high four blocks in a win against Montana. She added three boards and two steals in a loss to South Dakota.

Freshman libero Macy Carrabine has played in 65 sets this season for the University of Denver volleyball team (23-5), which opens NCAA tournament play against Cal Poly today in Los Angeles.

Middle blocker Madison Smeathers had nine kills and a dig in Ohio State’s volleyball loss to Illinois. She finished her sophomore season third on the team in kills with 212 and third in blocks with 76.

GREENWOOD

Senior kicker Griffin Oakes was named to the All-Big Ten first team this week after capping his career as the second-leading scorer in Indiana football history with 354 points. Oakes made a field goal and three point-after kicks in the Hoosiers’ final game, a 31-24 loss at Purdue.

IUPUI women’s basketball played in the Central Florida Holiday Tournament, losing to the host school and defeating Wyoming. Sophomore guard Holly Hoopingarner finished with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals in the win.

Sophomore guard Jae Taft played six minutes and had a rebound and steal in Olivet Nazarene’s 95-87 win at Roosevelt.

WHITELAND

St. Francis freshman guard Sidney Crowe scored five points, grabbed two rebounds and had two assists off the bench in her team’s 73-43 triumph against Spring Arbor. She followed with two rebounds and a team-high eight boards in a loss to Indiana Tech.

Redshirt freshman guard Kate White is averaging 2.4 points for the Indiana Tech women’s basketball team. She scored a season-high six points against both Wright State-Lake and Carlow.

FRANKLIN

St. Mary-of-the-Woods point guard Tara Parmer finished with 17 points in her team’s 93-86 loss to Fontbonne College. The senior also chipped in five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Redshirt freshman middle blocker Addie Payne finished the volleyball season with 108 kills to rank fifth among Evansville players this season.
