A traffic stop on Monday night led deputies to find a scooter stolen from an Edinburgh man earlier this month.
Lee Wood, a double-amputee who used a scooter to get back and forth from his job, reported it stolen at the beginning of the month. He told police he had left the scooter chained to a tree outside his apartment, and it had been taken by someone who had cut the chain.
Just before 6:30 p.m. Monday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped to check on a scooter he had seen pulling into driveways along County Road 200E, south of Franklin. The driver was wearing dark clothing, and when the deputy stopped, a resident had confronted the man for being on his property, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.
When the deputy checked the vehicle identification number of the scooter, which had been painted, he found that it had been reported stolen by Wood, the report said.
The scooter driver, Jason L. Sanders, 34, Nineveh, was arrested on charges of theft, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, making a false statement about his identity and a warrant for robbery in Shelby County. Sanders initially gave deputies a fake name, until another inmate identified him, which was verified through his fingerprints.
Sanders, 7950 S. Tipton Trail, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held without bond.
