ERWIN, N.C. — Police in North Carolina say a man is accused of shooting three people just months after he was released from prison for another shooting.

The Fayetteville Observer reports the Erwin Police Department says 24-year-old Gregory Taylor of Spring Lake is charged with attempted murder and other offenses. Authorities say he served 15 months for another shooting and was released from prison in July.

Police Chief Jonathan Johnson said officers working security at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Monday heard what they thought were gunshots. About then, Harnett County dispatchers were getting calls that people had been shot. As he went to the scene, Johnson said he saw a speeding van, and he and officers chased it.

Johnson said Taylor was arrested after the van rammed a patrol car.
