SOUTH GATE, Calif. — Police fatally shot an assault suspect who opened fire on officers while holed up in a pickup truck during a standoff that lasted more than three hours near Los Angeles.

KNBC-TV reports the man was wanted for allegedly sending his live-in girlfriend to a hospital after striking her with a handgun.

He could be seen drinking and smoking while reclined in the driver’s seat of the pickup parked in the city of South Gate late Monday.

Police urged him to surrender and at one point deployed non-lethal irritants into the truck to try and get him to come out.

Officers returned fire when the suspect began shooting at them through the truck window. He was struck and died at the scene.

No officers were hurt.
