NEW YORK — Joe Carbone threw for 268 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Stony Brook’s four running backs together gained 361 more with six touchdowns in a 59-29 defeat of Lehigh in the opening round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.
The Seahawks (10-2 and ranked tenth in the FCS polls) advance with six straight wins to face fellow Colonial Athletic Association foe, top-seeded and top-ranked James Madison (11-0) on Dec. 2 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The teams did not meet in conference.
After a scoreless first quarter, Stony Brook broke away with 17 unanswered points before halftime, including touchdown runs of 5 and 1 yards by Stacey Bedell and Jordan Gowins, respectively.
Gowins and Donald Liotine, who ran for 133 yards, each scored two TDs. The fourth running back, Sherman Alston, burst around right end with 2:44 left in the game, racing 47 yards to score his first TD of his senior year.
The potent Seawolves offense also featured a 76-yard scoring bomb from Carbone to Harrison Jackson, who had three catches for 122 yards.
Dom Bragalone gained 75 yards for Lehigh before suffering a leg injury that put him on crutches. Brad Mayes completed 33 of 48 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
Stony Brook had been picked to finish eighth in the Colonial preseason poll.
